March 24th: Quilt Turning

Date: Friday, March 24th

Time: 6:30pm

Location: M.R. Dye Public Library // 2885 Goodman Rd. • Horn Lake, MS

Don’t miss Horn Lake Public Library presentation by Southern quilter, PJ Witherspoon, who will share a pictorial history of lives and experiences through handmade quilts. Quilt Turning is a creative and interactive way to present history and a way to learn from our past.

Each quilt represents a significant period of our nation’s history culminating in a quilt, featuring messages about the Civil War Underground Railroad. It is said that African American slaves may have used a quilt code to navigate the Underground Railroad. Quilts with patterns named “wagon wheel,” “tumbling blocks” and “bear’s paw” appear to have contained secret messages that helped direct slaves to freedom. It is believed the purpose of this communication was on how to get ready to escape, what to do on the trip and how to follow a path to freedom.

It is believed that quilts were hung on the clotheslines or fences as signals for run-away slaves. Colors were very important to slave quilt makers. Quilts with the color black might indicate a place of refuge (safe house). Triangles in quilt design may have signified prayer messages or prayer badge, a way of offering prayer.
